Consol Solar Jar wins the Special Recognition Award

Consol's award winning Solar Jar

The winners of the 2011 Institute of Packaging SA (IPSA) Gold Pack Awards were announced at a glittering event in Cape Town on Tuesday night. Consol was honoured with no less than six Gold Awards - accolades we share with our respective customers. Most exciting though is the Special Recognition Award we received for our Solar Jar - designed and developed by our very own Ockert van Heerden and John Bexley. Although not strictly 'packaging' the judges decided this clever use of a packing material deserved an accolade.

Safely housed in our beautiful 1-litre Consol Classic preserve jar, which provides a practical and attractive casing for the functional product, this alternative light source is literally bottled sunshine. Solar powered LED lights are powered by sunlight which is harnessed through solar panelling fitted on the lid.

This Consol design innovation is a true measure of "form meets function". From the many without an electricity supply to avid campers, dècor enthusiasts and wedding planners, the Solar Jar is set to be South Africa's first choice of solar light source.
