Consol Nigel – the Landscape

Our plans to increase capacity, through the investment in a new Nigel glass factory, are well underway and the construction team has broken ground and started excavating the Nigel site. To mark this occasion a ground breaking event was staged on 4 June 2010 symbolising the official start of construction.

Consol Takes a View

As the construction project officially gets underway, we celebrate the fact that as the largest glass manufacturer in Africa, we will continue to be in a position to meet future market growth expectations.

Set to increase glass container production by 25% (220 000 tons), Consol Nigel once complete (see model view left), will elevate our total glass production to over one-million tons per annum (in excess of 4-billion glass containers).

Consol Invests in the Future of Nigel

Not only will we deliver world-class glass packaging solutions out of Nigel, we will actively contribute to this local economy.

A R250 000 investment by Consol into the upliftment of education in the Nigel area was announced at the soil turning event. A framed image, representative of the generous donation, was presented by our HR Director Thami Mkhuzangwe to the City of Ekurhuleni’s Honourable Executive Mayor, Ntombi Mekgwe.

Consol Breaks Ground ...

The event marked a significant milestone on the Consol almanac, and we hosted an impressive guest contingent with Mayoral party representatives from the City of Ekurhuleni, shareholders, our project contractors, Miss Earth South Africa Semi-Finalists, staff and media present.

Publicly demonstrating her support of our new R1.9-billion factory, the Mayor dug in and celebrated the significance of the project to both the community of Nigel and to the glass packaging industry.

Consol Commits to “Green”

The design of the new Nigel factory has been carefully considered, at all times taking into account best practices around the world.

In keeping with our approach to sustainability, it was agreed that from the outset, the new Nigel factory would set the benchmark for the other factories in our group for energy efficiency and general environmental impact.

The Miss Earth In Association with Consol Semi-Finalists who joined the celebrations, added a touch of glamour to the event, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to the environment.
