Upcycled wine bottle candle holders

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Completion Time: ± 45 minutes

It’s time to wine down as we get closer to the summer holidays, and there’s no better way to relax than by sipping on your favourite vino. If your glass recycling bin is starting to look a bit full, why not upcycle some of your empty bottles into gorgeous candle holders? They’ll add some serious style to your table next time you’re wining and dining — and if any of your guests really like them, they make unique gifts!

Materials Needed

Amount Material
- A piece of wood or board
- String
- Matches or a lighter
- Sandpaper
4 Candles
- Ice water
- Sandpaper
2 Empty wine bottles, washed (white wine bottles with clear glass work best)

You can use any bottles, but we love the beautiful designs on these Protea bottles. You can also stencil and spray paint your own designs if you’re feeling extra crafty!

Body Wine Bottle

  1. Fill a sink with hot water. Soak your bottles in the water for 10 minutes.
  2. Peel off the labels and stickers from the bottles. If they don’t come off easily, use a scrubbing brush to remove them. Use some nail polish remover for stubborn stickers.
  3. Take a bottle, and wrap a piece of string 5-6 times around the middle. Tie and cut off any loose ends.
  4. Burn around the string. When the fire starts to burn out, submerge the bottle in the iced water. It should break off easily and cleanly.
  5. Sand the edges until smooth.
  6. Repeat with the other bottle.
