#IChanged 2050

CHOOSE TODAY CHANGE TOMORROW

It has been almost a year since we launched #IChanged2050 brand campaign. This is a snapshot of some of the great initiatives we are involved in:

Beach clean ups

Together with our staff, local organisations and volunteers in CPT & KZN we have hosted 121 cleanups, collected 2479 bags of litter of which 3804kgs were sent for recycling. We prevented just over 10 tonnes of waste from polluting our oceans to date.

Action Responsible for Management of our Rivers [ARMOUR]

In addition to our coastal beaches, it is just as important to ensure that waterways in non-coastal areas stay waste-free. Consol is sponsoring two teams of ARMOUR water warriors to do river clean-ups in Alexandra, Tembisa and surrounding areas every Wednesday & Saturday. We are also placing a glass bank in Alexandra to encourage glass recycling.

Reverse Vending Machines [RVMs]

Recycling is an important part of waste management so Consol has partnered with Imagined Earth to place 10 RVMs in a strategic locations in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Tshwane to reward people for recycling their packaging waste which includes all materials like cans, plastics, tetrapak and glass.

Consol will also donate R2.50 to the Two Oceans Aquarium's Turtle Rehabilitation programme for every glass item recycled through the RVMs.

Matrics in Antartica

Consol is a sponsor of the 2022 Matrics In Antartica programme, which aims to drive awareness around climate change. It also encourages young people to think about their daily packaging choices and consider how glass packaging can contribute towards long-term solutions. Th five winners, who will be going to Antartica at the end of the year, are currently implementing thier initiatives in their communities.

Ushaka Sea World

Consol supports the education outreach programme of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research [SAAMBR]. The sponsorship allowed four groups of 60 learners from disadvantaged schools to visit Ushaka and to learn about our oceans through curriculum-based lessons.

Two Oceans Aquarium

We have extended our partnership with the Two Oceans Aquarium with two exciting initiatives.

  • Turtle Rehabilitation programme: The aquarium rescues, rehabilitates and releases turtle hatchlings that have been swept down from the KZN coast and wash up on Cape beaches. Consol will get to adopt and name several hatchlings and will closely follow their rehabilitation to eventual release. Consol has promised that every glass item recycled contributes towards the company's donation to theTwo Oceans Aquarium's Turtle Rehabilitation Programme.

  • Education programme: Consol will sponsor 100 children from under-resourced communities to visit the aquarium and learn about pollution in our oceans and how to reduce waste.

Choose Today. Change Tomorrow.

Unless we change the way we consume, by 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. But by making better choices today, we can create a better tomorrow.

Glass is completely natural. It takes nothing away from the environment and leaves nothing harmful behind.

By choosing sustainable packaging such as glass, we can be part of the change and give our oceans a chance to recover. It’s a simple choice that can lead to oceans of change.

To encourage the switch from single-use to reusable material we’ve developed a range of three on-trend, glass bottles, each carrying the line I CHANGED 2050 - a simple yet powerful declaration of commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for our oceans. To further our own commitment, we’re donating 10% of each bottle sold to sea life conservation!

Additionally, we've taken an active role. Along with Clean C, we've hosted and participated in environmental clean-up days and look forward to doing more of these in the future. We'll also be embarking on education drives to clean local community rivers, which ultimately feed back to the oceans! With the help of our volunteers, in 8 short months, we've managed to collect litter totalling 7 994kg's (just under 8 tonnes) – the equivalent weight of two adult Orcas (Killer Whales).

If you’d like to join us for a clean-up day happening near you, be sure to keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages for more information and updates.

By choosing glass, you’re choosing sustainability - A simple act that can lead to oceans of change.

Get your I CHANGED 2050 bottle at your nearest Consol Shop, or online today. Buy two for R100, and you’ll get a 3rd bottle FREE while stocks last!
